As Nepal is a landlocked country surrounded by India and China, you can get food influenced by these countries however you will get different cuisines from all over the world in major tourist destinations like Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan National Park. First, introduce you to the traditional Nepali food called Dal-Bhat Set. Dal-Bhat comes in a set of Vegetables, Chicken, and Mutton curry. This local meal includes steamed rice, black dal (Pulse), bitter gourd, fried potato, chicken/mutton/green vegetable curry, salad, and homemade tomato pickle with an optional choice of local ghee (butter). You can have a choice to have Dhedo (made of buckwheat flour) in addition. Dal,-Bhat is the basic food of Nepal. Nepali people have that food twice a day Lunch and Dinner. Mo: Mo is a hugely popular food in Nepal. Momo to Nepal is what pizza is to Italy, and is available in almost every restaurant, hotel, and even household, in Nepal with a wide variety of vegetable momo, Chicken momo, pork momos, paneer momos, etc. The dish is prepared from wheat flour, vegetable oil, chopped onion, garlic, sesame, green chilies, tomatoes, meat, mustard powder, ginger juice, and a blend of Nepalese herbal spices that add a bit of uniqueness and originality. Mo: Mo can be termed as a special type of dumpling and has become part of the Nepalese food habits and culture. You can have options for steamed, fried, or mixed soup. Almost each and every restaurant or food stall provides momos in Nepal.
If you are looking for Must-try food and the best places to eat, you should not forget Newari cuisine. Newari cuisine is the most celebrated food variety in Nepal consisting of over 200 dishes. Newari khana is also a subset of Newari cuisine. Beaten rice is a staple food in Newari culture. Newari cuisine consists of many different dishes, many of which are cooked with a generous amount of spices like cumin, turmeric, pepper, cinnamon, ginger, garlic, chilies, and mustard oil and seeds.
At feasts and festivals, various preparations based on buffalo meat and Chicken are served along with curries of vegetables and pulses. Home-made liquor (thon) is also served along with the food. Similarly, kwati (soup of different beans), kachina (spiced minced meat), chhoila, which is buffalo meat marinated in spices and grilled over the flames of dried wheat stalks, wo (lentil cake), paun Kwa (sour soup), stuffed lung, fried liver, fried tongue, tripe stuffed with bone marrow and jellied fish soup are some of the popular Newari food.
Thakali khana, Indian food, Tibetan food, and other ethnic cuisines according to different regions of Nepal. You will also get to drink local handmade alcohols which we term Rakshi or you can try Tongba, Chhyang. You will also get to taste the Nepali popular Dada Ghare wine and Gorkha Bear.
